Description

Star Anise or Chinese Anise. It is a small tree that reaches a height of eight meters. Its leaves are lanceolate and its flowers are yellow. Its name is mainly due to anethole, an essential oil with a strong aroma and flavor found in both spices as well as in fennel. The fruit of this tree has a star shape with 8 points. Inside the points are the seeds of the plant, which are used for their beneficial and culinary properties.

The taste of the seed strongly resembles that of anise and when it was introduced to Europe in the 16th century, it was used as a cheap substitute for anise. In China and coastal regions of India, it was used to flavor red meat, poultry, and as a main ingredient in the Chinese five-spice mixture.

It has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. It is a digestive, anti-rheumatic, diuretic, and laxative herb. It is used to relieve muscle cramps, low back pain, and sciatica. It is used as a galactagogue and emmenagogue, and is a valuable aid in conditions such as bronchitis and asthma.

Star anise increases intestinal peristalsis, promoting digestion and relieving constipation and bloating. It also has appetizing and soothing properties and is effective in infections and bad breath.

In aromatherapy, star anise increases cognitive function and promotes mental balance.

Usage: As an infusion, boil a teaspoon of star anise leaves and seeds in a cup of water. Strain and drink without sugar. As a decoction, lightly crush the seeds and pour boiling water. Star anise gives dishes a sweet, peppery flavor and pairs particularly well with meats such as pork, chicken, and duck.
