It is the end of the 19th century and more than 9000 windmills adorn the Dutch countryside. Some of these are specifically designed to dry the low-lying areas, known as "polders". In the polders among these windmills are fields filled with colorful tulips - the flower that was once part of the tumultuous history of the first financial bubble but is now simply a staple of the Dutch landscape, especially along the famous Bloemen route (or "Flower Route").

In Windmill Valley, a game inspired by the Bloemen route, you and up to three other players take on the roles of tulip farmers and entrepreneurs. You will build and upgrade your windmills, seek out new tulip bulbs from foreign trade or local suppliers to buy and plant, and strive to gain an edge with hires and lucrative contracts. Let your blooming fields make your competitors envious!

During their turn, players choose an action by rotating the wheels on their windmill board. During the game, they can:

• Upgrade their wheels, adding improvements, to build their engine
• Plant tulips in their fields, which will yield VP at the end of the game
• Construct windmills on the main board to activate rewards from adjacent fields
• Hire assistants who provide bonuses for certain actions
• Acquire contracts for end-game scoring
• Visit the local market and engage in international trade
