Description & Specifications

Alchemical miracle of a poet Fiona Benson, author of Vertigo & Ghost
“Vibrant, lyrical, and always surprising... As comforting as a call to action” Nathan Filer, author of The Shock of the Fall

A brilliant new collection by Romalyn Ante, an award-winning nurse and poet, who moves between the Philippines and Wolverhampton, myth and the stark reality of the NHS today.

“This enchants the hidden light of stars – this diverges spheres – this unfolds a war –”
In some Filipino tribes, parents pass on an AGIMAT, an amulet, to each child, hoping its magic will protect and empower them. At the onset of the pandemic, the poet – a practicing nurse in the NHS – is thrust into the front line of the war against COVID-19.

Past wars come to the present. When she falls in love with a man of Japanese descent, she is compelled to consider her family's ordeal during the fierce Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Elsewhere, we encounter the irresistible goddess Mebuyan, who, in Filipino mythology, cares for the spirits of children in the underworld. Here, she watches over young people in crisis – a girl who cannot stop self-harming, a teenager who has jumped from a railway embankment.

These are poems of power and solace; they pose questions about what it means to struggle and what it takes to heal.
