The French historian Joseph is the foremost Jewish historian of the Hellenistic-Roman era. He was born in Jerusalem around 37 AD, coming from a family of high descent. He was a philosopher and was well-versed in Jewish jurisprudence and Greek literature. After his mission to Rome to support some Jewish priests, he returned to Jerusalem and in 66 AD attempted to prevent the revolt against Rome by managing the affairs of Galilee. In the ensuing unrest, he collaborated with Eustachius and was present at the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, enjoying favorable treatment from the emperors.

His main historical contribution is his works, "The Jewish War" and "Antiquities of the Jews." The work "The Jewish War" comprises seven books and covers the period from 170 BC to his own time, originally written in Aramaic and later translated into Greek by himself. The "Antiquities of the Jews" consists of twenty books and covers from the creation of the world up to 66 AD. The Loeb Classical Library edition includes Joseph's works in thirteen volumes, as well as his autobiography and his treatise "Against Apion."
