CALENDAR OF LADY: BEST BOOKS OF 2024

A haunted calendar of a life dedicated to the visual art of cinema and the written word, by Ireland's greatest director and one of the brightest novelists. In this vibrant, moving, and strange memorial, Neil Jordan – the author of classic works such as "The Past," "The East with the Sea Monster," and "Night in Tunisia," as well as creator of iconic films like "Angel," "Mona Lisa," "The Scream of the Game," and "Interview with the Vampire" – deeply explores his own past and that of his family.

His mother was a painter, his father an inspector of schools who investigated ghosts, and Jordan grew up on the edge of an abandoned aristocratic estate in North Dublin, whose secret ruins fueled his imagination. Passionate about music, he played in bands and theater groups and met a radical named Jim Sheridan at University College Dublin. Together, they directed unforgettable dramatic productions that hinted at their future careers.

His first collection of stories and his debut novel, "Night in Tunisia" and "The Past," received praise, but Jordan also dedicated himself to the freedom and visual richness of cinema, collaborating with the great English director John Boorman on the epic project "Excalibur." His first film with Steven Rea, "Angel," was a brilliant and asymmetric approach to the horrific violence of disturbances, and since then his films combine, in a unique way, intense transcendental elements with reflections on violence and sexuality.

Jordan describes his collaborations with Steven Rea, Jaye Davidson, Bob Hoskins, Tom Cruise, and many others, but this is not a conventional biography of a filmmaker. The book is a haunted, meditative quest for loss, love, and creativity, for inspiration and influence, by one of Ireland's most extraordinary artists.
