Book: Examined Lives. Diogenes Laertius, the author of a work on Greek philosophy, likely lived in the first half of the third century, while his origin and birthplace remain unknown. As a philosopher of Epicureanism, his work is not philosophical. Its title is "History of Philosophy" or "On the Lives, Opinions and Sayings of Famous Philosophers" and consists of ten books, divided into two "Succession" or sections: "Ionian" from Anaximander to Theophrastus and Chrysippus, including the Socratic schools, and "Italian" from Pythagoras to Epicurus (which covers the entirety of the last book), including the Eleatics and the Skeptics. It is a collection of excerpts and facts, which has very great value. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Diogenes Laertius is published in two volumes.
