Description

The necessity of selenium and its contribution to the human body was first mentioned in 1957, when Schwartz and Foltz proved that traces of dietary selenium prevent liver necrosis in cases of vitamin E deficiency.

During the 1960s and 1970s, epidemiological studies demonstrated the anticancer action of selenium. A total of 18 other selenium enzymes and proteins have been discovered.

Antioxidant action – Selenium primarily acts as an element of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which works with vitamin E to prevent the destructive action of free radicals. High concentrations of selenium are found in glutathione peroxidase, present in sperm and testes. According to research and clinical trials, selenium supplementation improved sperm motility and increased the chances of conception/fertilization. Cell protection - According to clinical trials on 1300 individuals, the intake of 200mcg of selenium daily for a period of 4.5 years reduced cancer death rates by 50% compared to those taking a placebo. Men who consume selenium through their diet have a 65% lower chance of developing prostate cancer. Immune system enhancement – Selenium's involvement in the production of glutathione peroxidase affects the entire immune system. The use of selenium supplements helps strengthen and/or restore the body's immune function.
  • Even in elderly population groups, selenium activates the action of white blood cells.
  • Dietary selenium deficiency reduces the incidence of the hepatitis virus.
Anti-inflammatory action - In inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, and psoriasis, selenium levels are low. Glutathione peroxidase is important for reducing inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Thyroid regulation – Selenium contributes to the production of thyroid hormone. According to recent studies, selenium aids in the treatment of autoimmune thyroid diseases. Cataract prevention – The development of cataracts is associated with the degenerative action of free radicals. Those suffering from cataracts have low selenium levels. Cardiovascular protection – The use of selenium supplements increases HDL cholesterol and decreases LDL cholesterol. Pregnancy and prenatal care – Selenium contributes to the normal development of the fetus. Low selenium levels are associated with the birth of underweight infants. Possible application/Indications: Selenium has a wide range of actions and possible applications such as: cancer prevention, cardiovascular diseases, male infertility, healthy fetal development, thyroid regulation, antibiotic action.
