The definitive English edition of “Father of Medicine.” Hippocrates, said to have been born in Kos around 460 B.C., learned medicine and philosophy, traveled extensively as a physician and teacher, and consulted with King Perdiccas of Macedonia and Artaxerxes of Persia. He likely died in Larissa. It appears that he rejected the doctrine of the supernatural and preferred the strategy of inductive reasoning and the study of real medicine as a subject of natural laws, both generally and in relation to patients for treatment with drugs and surgery.
Of the approximately seventy works of the “Hippocratic Collection,” many are not actually by Hippocrates, and even the famous oath may not be his. However, he was undoubtedly the “Father of Medicine.” The works available in the Loeb Classical Library edition of Hippocrates are:
Volume I: Ancient Medicine. Winds, Waters, Places. Epidemics 1 and 3. The Oath. Prognosis. Nutritional regimen.
