In a new very important historical publication for the broader area of Trikala, the Philological, Historical, and Literary Society (Φ.Ι.ΛΟ.Σ.) of Trikala collaborated with K. & M. Ant. Stamoulis Publishing House of Thessaloniki. It is an enhanced and expanded edition of Nikolaos Yanoulis's book "The Armatoliki of Aspropotamos and the Stornaraites." The new stylish 211-page edition is an accessible read, particularly easy to read, a book that can be read aloud, leaving the reader with a sense of knowledge and pleasure.
In this new edition, which deserves its historical significance as a result of thorough study and deep immersion in sources (primary and secondary), as evidenced by the references and extensive bibliography of the author, the style of the author and his peculiar writing remain unchanged. Additions were made to footnotes with etymological explanations, semantic clarifications, and new informational material, all aimed at optimal understanding, especially by younger readers; these new footnotes are indicated with an asterisk. The edition was also enriched with images of people appearing in the text and objects, as well as an alphabetical list of the names and places mentioned. Maps and illustrative images to clarify events were added. A significant addition includes new maps, created based on modern morphological maps, to more vividly highlight parts of the text, such as the borders of the Armatoliki, battles, and so on.
The author of the book, Nikolaos Yanoulis, traces the actions of the Stornaraites both inside and outside the Armatoliki of Aspropotamos. He particularly discusses the name and boundaries of the Armatoliki, the occupations of its residents, and the leaders of the Armatoliki. He focuses on the actions of the most important leader, Nikolaos Stornararis. He presents the politics he followed against the Kotzabasides, Ali Pasha, and the people of Aspropotamos. He describes the first, second, and third Turkish invasions of Aspropotamos, as well as Nikolaos Stornararis’s participation in the siege of Messolonghi and his death. Finally, he outlines the personality of Stornararis through his actions. The Epilogue also includes the names of Aspropotamos residents who supported the struggle through their activism or financial means.
Noteworthy are also the documents provided, most of which were written by Stornararis himself, exposing the thoughts and concerns of the fighter and revealing more vividly his character and personality. The book concludes with a comprehensive index of names and place names mentioned in the main text, as well as the printed bibliography used by the author and the electronic and printed sources consulted during editing.
