Description & Specifications

A boy named Nicky spends his holidays with his grandmother in a secluded village. There aren’t many children to play with, and he doesn’t know his grandmother well. What will he do all alone throughout the summer? His grandmother's house is next to a wide and calm river, teeming with fish, otters, and turtles. Foxes and raccoons wander along the tree-lined banks, along with rabbits and deer. Birds of all kinds fly in the sky above the water and the forests. The river is majestic and full of life. It’s no wonder the boy is enchanted, especially when an old raft appears out of nowhere. Its dry logs are covered with drawings of animals and birds, made with chalk or pencil. By whom and when? And where did the raft come from?

Jim LaMarche's story is not just about an extraordinary summer that a child spends by the river, with a grandmother who paints, carves, and fishes. Neither the underwater play with the otters and fish, nor the rescue of a deer, nor the spectacular dives into the water are the most important things that happen in the book. The real miracle is that, inspired by the drawings on the raft's boards, which his grandmother made in her childhood, Nicky also starts to paint and does it very well. He discovers his calling: painting makes him happy, and he wants to do it for the rest of his life. It is a pivotal moment that not everyone has the opportunity to experience. Let’s help and encourage children as much as possible to discover their talents and pursue their passions, Jim LaMarche tells us through this memory from his own childhood - it is the path to a fulfilling life.

It was a warm sunny afternoon. I leaned my back against the shade of a willow tree and waited to see which animals would be attracted to the raft. It didn’t take long before an impressive blue heron landed, with a fish in its long beak. I quickly grabbed a pencil and began to draw. The bird had its lunch just a few steps away from me, but I felt invisible. In the end, it adjusted its wings, looked back at the river, and flew away. That evening, I showed my drawing to my grandmother. Not bad. Not bad at all, she said, and hung it on the wall.
