War of the Roses: Kingmaker is a team-based third-person action game set in 15th-century England. The rival Houses of Lancaster and York fight for the throne, while players can choose a side and take part in online battles. This edition includes the Assault mode, three new maps, two additional game modes, and weapons and armor from the Knights Hospitaller, Gallowglass Mercenary, Winter Has Arrived, and Outside the Law updates.

During a match, players can switch characters, and between matches they can choose different customized class profiles. Damage is calculated based on the point of impact, the armor material, and the side of the weapon that hits the opponent. When a player is defeated, they can be killed instantly or knocked to the ground; they can then be finished off, revived by a teammate, or choose to respawn. After death, players respawn at a team location or near their captain, if a team has been selected.
