The poet in exile. Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso, 43 BC–17 AD) was born in Sulmo and studied rhetoric and law in Rome. He later held a significant public office there and dedicated the rest of his life to poetry and society. While he was famous, he offended Emperor Augustus with his work Ars amatoria and was exiled because of this work and other reasons unknown to us, living in the cold and primitive city of Tomis on the Black Sea. He continuously wrote poetry; he was a kind-hearted man, leading a measured life. He died in exile.
Ovid's main surviving works include the Metamorphoses, a source of inspiration for artists and poets such as Churchill and Shakespeare. The Fasti, a poetic account of the Roman year, of which Ovid only completed half. The Amores, love poems. The Ars amatoria, not moral but clever and in places beautiful. The Heroides, imaginary love letters from legendary women to absent husbands. And the somber works written in exile: the Tristia, appeals to individuals including his wife as well as the emperor. And similar Letters from the Pontus. Poetry came naturally to Ovid, who at his best is lively, picturesque, and vivid.
