Description

Ibsen wrote his last social drama in 1882 during his stay in Rome. While Europe is shaken by significant political events, the playwright turns his gaze to the insular Norwegian society.

The hero of the drama is Dr. Thomas Stockmann, who confronts the Administration of a spa town in southern Norway. The waters of the baths have been polluted, but the Administration stubbornly refuses to address their purification, as the costs would be exorbitant. The doctor takes the matter into his own hands and calls his fellow citizens to a protest rally. However, his speech provokes the anger of those present, and ultimately, the rebel Stockmann ends up becoming the "enemy of the people."

The play is presented in a translation by Margarita Melberg. The volume also includes an extensive epilogue written specifically for this edition by Anna Stavrakopoulou, Professor of Theater Studies at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as well as a chronology of the life and works of the great Norwegian playwright.

An Enemy of the People continues to spark interest and awaken consciousness. It stirs the stagnant waters of society and brings pressing contemporary issues to the fore. Remarkable 21st-century performances in Greece that resonate with today include a production by a group of young creators, graduates of AUTH, titled Ibsen Mine: An Enemy of the People Meets the People, in the conference room of the Thessaloniki City Hall. Additionally, in 2023, an event took place in the courtyard of the old Kalyrroi primary school featuring local residents, members of the local struggle committee.
