«Smaragda, don’t touch my things! What don’t you understand?» she yells, as if I’m going to steal her erasers. I used to do that when I was little. Back then, she would laugh with me and tease me that I would erase myself along with them. Back then, I was the little sister. Rubini’s little Smaragda. The girl who locks herself in her room no longer lets me search her drawer for colored papers. She says it’s an invasion of privacy. I know that the real nosy one is Mrs. Katerina, our teacher, who wants to know what we do at home and makes us write “thinking and writing” about how we spent Easter, where we went on vacation, and things like that. Not me, who is looking for materials for my Art class! She’s changed, I tell you, a lot. My Rubini has disappeared and the new one has these huge feet. We can’t fit on the armchair with Mom anymore. We look like sardines in a can.
