Description

Description

Combining a fast aperture, compact size, and a versatile telephoto zoom range from wide to short distances, the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens can be an everyday lens for all things for all types of content creators. The 28-70mm zoom range and fast f/2.8 aperture make this lens suitable for everything from landscapes to portraits and anything in between. The lens also features L-series quality optical elements, while being maintained in a smaller form factor - and relatively affordable price for the performance and features.

Fast and Compact

The RF 28-70mm differs from its L-series counterpart (the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L) by maintaining a much smaller and lighter form factor. It achieves this through an advanced optical design and a more conservative, yet still very capable, 28mm wide-angle starting point. When not in use, the lens can collapse into itself, resulting in even greater space savings in a bag or when slung over the shoulder.

The relatively fast constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 allows this lens to have significant advantages over similarly sized options that opt for a more conventional f/4 aperture, enabling the creation of images with a shallower depth of field. Portrait shooting and low-light shooting will benefit from the more pleasing bokeh and increased light-gathering capabilities, respectively.

Quality L Series Optics

Canon has placed the optical performance of the RF 28-70mm on the same level as its renowned L-series lenses. This is no small feat, especially for a lens that also manages to maintain a relatively small form factor. The lens's advanced optical design helps ensure the capture of detailed images throughout the zoom range and even when shooting wide open.

  • Two Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) elements are located at the front of the lens design, a configuration previously found only in L-series lenses, which correct chromatic aberration and reduce the weight of the front lens group.
  • Two aspherical glass elements suppress aberrations and contribute to maintaining a compact overall lens size.
  • The Super Spectra Coating (SSC) reduces backlit flare and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.

Fast Autofocus and Built-in Stabilization

Make the most of your lens's high-quality optics by using the RF 28-70mm's fast stepper motor (STM) autofocus system and optical image stabilizer to ensure sharp images. These two features will help you lock onto your subjects and ensure that camera shake is controlled.

  • The Stepper Motor (STM) autofocus is fast and quiet for optimal performance during both still and video shooting.
  • Focus breathing is well controlled, resulting in smooth rack focus during video recording.
  • The Optical Image Stabilizer is rated for up to 5.5 stops on its own or up to 7.5 stops when used in coordination with a compatible camera's in-body stabilization system. This system will help reduce blur from camera shake when shooting handheld, even in dark shooting situations and with longer shutter speeds.

Lightweight and Compact Design

The key to the success of the RF 28-70mm is its physical construction. It is small, lightweight, and durable. A weather-sealed construction, like the L-series glass, ensures that this lens can be used in rain or shine. This makes it a reliable choice for photographers and videographers.

  • The retractable design keeps the lens size even more compact when not in use.
  • The customizable control ring and smooth manual focus ring allow for tactile operation of the lens.
  • The sealed construction allows for operation in less than ideal weather conditions.

I have had it in my possession for a month! So far I can say it is very good, the autofocus reaches about 80-85% of the more expensive 24-70 and it is absolutely justified for the price being over 1000 lower! As for sharpness, I mainly shoot video and I had no issues, I have all the corrections in camera turned off and I see minimal vignette which in video is not really bothersome! Regarding build quality, I didn't particularly like that it extends so much when zooming and the plastic they used, although in no way does it feel completely fake! Overall, it will do the same job as the 24-70, more economically and at 80% of its performance
