Description & Specifications

Following the successful scientific Symposium titled "Lost in Translation: (Re)searching the Unpublished Translations of Ancient Drama" (June 3, 2024, Amphitheater of the Library, Faculty of Philosophy, E.K.P.A.), the Laboratory of Ancient Drama and Theatre Studies of the Department of Theatre Studies E.K.P.A. offers to the general public the Proceedings of the Symposium and the Workshop.

In the same research context, two emblematic theatrical translations of ancient drama have recently been published, which were until now unpublished in any printed or electronic form: Aeschylus's Oresteia, in the much-publicized translation by Georgios Sotiriadis, which triggered the "Oresteia" episodes when it was performed in 1903 at the Royal Theatre under the direction of Thomas Oikonomou (edited by Anna Mavroleon, PhD in Theatre Studies and lecturer in the Master's Program of the Department of Theatre Studies E.K.P.A.) and Euripides's Orestes, in the translation by playwright, director, translator, and critic Georgios Sevastikoglou, who directed the work in 1982 at the National Theatre (edited by Konstantina Ziropoulou, Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre Studies at the University of Patras).

The editorial supervision of the Proceedings and both translations is managed by the professor of the Department of Theatre Studies E.K.P.A. Kaiti Diamantakou, who is the Director of the Laboratory of Ancient Drama and Theatre Studies and the scientific supervisor of the research program "Unpublished Translations of Ancient Drama: Identification - Recording - Collection - Evaluation," which was undertaken, following the approval of a relevant research proposal, within the framework of the Call for Expression of Interest from the Special Account for Research Funds E.K.P.A. for the Action on the Utilization of the Trust Fund of Konstantinos A. Tsangadas "Research in Post-Classical Studies."

In this context, the editorial collaboration of the Laboratory of Ancient Drama and Theatre Studies with KAPA Publishing aims to bring to light as many unpublished theatrical translations of ancient drama as possible, aiming at the research benefit that the recovery of this primary material—which survives in public or private archives—can have for the study of the reception of ancient drama, the history of Greek theatre and Greek society, the history and theory of theatrical performance, and theatrical translation.
