Description & Specifications

The book includes eleven foundational texts by Luise von Flotow on the themes of gender, feminism, and translation. The selection of texts was made in collaboration with the author and covers 30 years of dedicated research, allowing aspects of the transformation of thought of one of the main theorists of feminist translation and one of the most significant voices in translation studies to emerge.

Considering the absence of a large number of works in Greek, this volume aims to present the approaches and developments of feminist translation in our country. Flotow reminds us why gender, language, and translation directly concern us and why they have and will always matter.

The term "feminist translation" implies the selection of specific texts for translation, while at the same time, other texts are set aside and consciously not translated. It entails that all involved parties (translators, editors, publishers) collaborate to ensure that a feminist translation uses language that is inclusive of women within a specific cultural context, adapting grammatical rules, employing terminology and language that respects women, making them visible in the text, inventing neologisms, and adopting other creative approaches aimed at making the foreign material accessible and meaningful in a new environment.

Feminist translation provides the translating subject with the necessary space to explain and comment on their choices, or to add introductory notes and postfaces where they can express their views and feelings about the work being translated. The latter turns translation into a shared experience between the authorial subject, the translating subject, and the reading audience, considering that no text is absolute, but can always be read, interpreted, understood, and applied differently.

Luise von Flotow is a professor of Translation Studies at the University of Ottawa in Canada. Vasiliki Misio is an assistant professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
