The three-part edition contains all of Bach's orchestrations of compositions by other composers. The orchestrations were likely commissioned by Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar around 1713/1714. The concerto performances demonstrate Bach's intense engagement with the then-new Italian concertante style and its foremost exponent, Antonio Vivaldi.
