In the third edition of "Pathological Physiology," the new authors deliver a thoroughly updated text, featuring images, diagrams, and tables that facilitate easy reading. For the first time, chapters covering the nervous system, sensory organs, the reproductive system, and the skin are included.
The aim is for the interested reader to understand and delve into the pathophysiological mechanisms in order to interpret pathological conditions, develop differential diagnostic thinking, and arrive at accurate diagnoses. The content aids in the transition from basic sciences to clinical practice, as well as in the review of fundamental pathogenic and pathophysiological mechanisms.
Following a brief description of the cell and its basic functions, chapters on all systems follow. For each system, the following unified framework is included: a brief introduction to the system, reference to anatomical/histological details, physiology, description of symptoms and signs relating to the diseases of the system, reference to diagnostic methods applied in the diagnostic approach of diseases, and description of diseases and the underlying pathogenic and pathophysiological mechanisms.
At the end of each chapter, clinical cases are described with questions aimed at self-assessment for the reader.
• Pantelis Zembekakis is a Professor of Pathology, and Maria Papaioannou is a Professor of Hematology in the same Department.
