Description

In this iconic work, first published in English in 1939 and continuously in print since then, the British classicist H.D.F Kitto analyzes, with a timelessly innovative approach, the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, highlighting in a perceptive manner the enduring artistic and literary legacy of the three great tragedians and the way each contributed to the evolution of the genre.

Considering the ever-growing interest of the wider reading public in ancient Greek tragedy, Kitto argued that the three tragedians were first and foremost artists and that the key to understanding classical drama lies in grasping the tragic conception of each work individually.

For Kitto, the critical point of the interpretive process is the formulation of the right questions and not the mistaken belief that there are clear and correct answers to issues primarily concerning the aesthetics of ancient Greek drama.

This new edition of Ancient Greek Tragedy is based on the revised edition of 1961, where the author's view crystallizes that in works of art, form and content are inextricably linked, necessitating their concurrent examination.

The book continues to influence performances of classical drama, offering a theoretical framework for groundbreaking approaches and interpretations.

This edition is accompanied by a handy index and a preface by British academic Edith Hall, which presents the reasons for the long-standing popularity of this landmark book for the study of ancient Greek drama.
