Medieval knights used a shield to protect themselves from the spear or sword of their opponent. The shield displayed the coat of arms of the knight. When knights were in battle on horseback, they used a long spear. If they were on foot, they used a sword. In tournaments, a knight would use a spear to strike down his opponent from his horse.
