Memories, images, and readings of the black-and-white city (from 1912 to 1974) evoke stimuli and associations for people and places that shaped its historical identity. George Anastasiadis, drawing material and ideas from historical and literary books, from experiences, and from old and contemporary newspapers, traces, preserves, and presents aspects of the multifaceted historical, spiritual, and cultural background of his birthplace.
The volume contains seven essays on historiography: In the first, the "brief" 20th century of the city is explored, and a study guide is proposed for the points from which our knowledge of the historical identity of modern Thessaloniki emanates.
