Description

“[…] The translation of such a masterpiece,” writes the poet N. Spanias, “is almost impossible. Almost… the unsurpassed Vasilis Rotas has held the primacy in Greek adaptation for the last 56 years. His translation is a recreation, and one rejects the idea that a translation will be found or made in the future to replace that of V. Rotas. The work, full of translational thistles and nettles, became in Rotas’s hands a lustrous, wholly green meadow. The fluidity of the work (no scene is more dramatic than another), the wordplay, and finally the poetry with which the deeply philosophical monologues (about the meaning of life) are laden are conveyed in full in the Greek translation, as if a masterful person were pouring liquid from one vessel into another without spilling even a single drop.”
