In this first tragedy and throughout Shakespeare's work, the dominant theme is power. The striking difference between the captive Tamora, who has been seized by misfortune, and the all-powerful Queen Tamora of Rome reveals how differently people can turn out under various conditions and situations.
Here, hypocrisy, cunning, treachery, lust, and debauchery, along with an unrestrained hunger for revenge and villainy, have so consumed the existence of this queen that they leave nothing human in her.
Her villainous spirit, clad in shamelessness, defiance, and contempt for power, pushes her towards acts so horrific and abominable that we are left in despair over how and who will stop this nightmarish evil.
