Description

Nominee for the audience awards Skroutz Book Awards 2025.

When I was six years old, my father told me that I would know I had succeeded in life when people stopped referring to me as "Latsis' daughter" or "Kourkoulos' daughter" and I would simply be "Erietta." What he didn't tell me was that between these two very heavy surnames, I would struggle a lot to find my identity. I consciously use the word "find," because Erietta always existed, just as the authentic self of every person exists.

This book describes the journey of my thirty years of life, during which I managed to return to my authentic self. During these years, I experienced beautiful moments, but also difficult ones. […] I laughed, danced, and traveled a lot, but I also hit rock bottom, was afraid, cried, and despaired.

In those moments, I was kept standing by my loved ones, on whom I was neither ashamed nor hesitant to lean, but also by my dream to use the luck and strength I was given to contribute to a better world for everyone. Without this purpose, I would have been lost in a meaningless existence from which I could not have survived.

Today, I can finally say that I stand on my own feet and I know very well who I am – I AM ERIETTA.

"Latsi, this is Latsi." I can't count the times I've heard this phrase from nearby groups and passersby. "Latsi," as if I were an alien, or even worse, as if I had done something wrong. Being still young, I learned to hate my own name. To hate it because it makes me stand out from the others. To hate it because it made many people hate me before even knowing me, without me being able to understand why. The name "Latsi" was what, in my mind, blocked and imprisoned "Erietta."

One day – I must have been eight or nine years old then – I was preparing my school assignment and, when I finished, I gave it to my dad to take a look at it. I remember clearly his expression as soon as he took it in his hands. "Sit down, please," he said sternly. "What is your name?" he continued. "Erietta," I answered timidly. "Don't you have a last name?" "I do..." "And what is it?" "Kourkoulou Latsi." (I knew very well at this point that I had only written "Kourkoulou.")

Erietta is a girl with famous and wealthy parents. The two heavy surnames, Kourkoulou-Latsi, weigh her down and trap her. Growing up, she tries to escape and fights to find her true self, the real Erietta...
For me, this is not just a simple book, it is a personal diary and a true soul confession!
By reading it, I got to know better a woman I already admired for her activism, through social media.
But I realized that everyone, regardless of our social and economic status, faces similar difficult problems.
I cried as I read about how she experienced her miscarriage, because I relived my own...
I felt my own panic attacks again... But together with her, I found the solution with the help of psychoanalysis and the search for the deeper cause.
I relived the anxiety, the disappointment, and finally the relief, the joy, and the happy ending, with the efforts to have a baby.
I became one with her, because I too have lived through and overcome similar difficult situations... Until I found my own true self.
However, such a book will certainly be indifferent to younger women. The same applies to those who have not experienced similar situations...
Through this book, I got to know and love the simple Erietta, not the Kourkoulou-Latsi!
The activist, the vegan, the sensitive little girl who transformed into a modern, dynamic, successful, and happy woman!
She had the courage to record and share with us her thoughts and the difficult and easy moments of her life, something not everyone does...
In the end, she made me think a lot about my own way of life... About what I could also do for a better world... I would really like to meet her in person...
I could not fail to mention the simple, yet apt and dynamic cover in gray tones. A wonderful photo of Erietta with a gentle smile looking us straight in the eye occupies most of it... And a title that emerges from the gray and says it all...
True, honest, authentic, and easy to read... A book I will keep in my library!
One of my favorite phrases from this particular book is: "Love is the answer to everything. And the love for ourselves always has priority!" Such a great truth...
