In July 1609, an English ship with a symbolic name, the Sea Adventure, sank near Bermuda. For a long time, the fate of the crew was unknown, causing considerable concern. With the return of the castaways, accounts of this maritime misfortune were published, which inspired Shakespeare's work. However, while all this satisfies the historical and literary adventure, it does not let us into the soul of The Tempest.
What is the enchanted island, lost in an indeterminate spot on the geographical map? A royal ship that sinks, a terrible storm that rises from the staff of some wizard, a girl who ecstasizes when she first sees people, monsters that barely emerge from the earth's mire, spirits that enliven the air. None of these hold any allegorical implication; instead, they set into motion one of the most exquisite poetic fantasies the world has ever seen. The Tempest is poetry – poetry in action.
