Description & Specifications

Inspector John Rebus returns to the Edinburgh Police, albeit with a lower rank than the one he retired with and slightly embittered.

A thirty-year-old case is reopened, and suspicions of mishandling fall on Rebus and his team from that time. Malcolm Fox is the officer heading this new investigation and the person who will be at the center of the conflict between the past and the present.

Does Rebus have anything to hide? Is he a saint or a sinner? Inspector Rebus is an old-fashioned policeman, with many weaknesses but always humane.

Readers have followed his adventures since 1987 when he was forty years old until his retirement in 2007. Now, however, he returns to the Police Force, more cantankerous and more tormented by his demons, and readers will finally learn which side the sullen anti-hero belongs to.

A narrow country road on the outskirts of Kirkliston. Edinburgh Airport was not far away, and the hum of passenger flights approaching and departing contrasted with the rural landscape. They had come in Clark's Vauxhall Astra. They had parked it opposite, with the hazard lights flashing as a warning to passing drivers. Not that anyone was passing by. "The road was good," said Clark. "There was no ice and it wasn't slippery. Judging by the damage, it must have been going like a bullet..." Indeed, the front of the Golf had been crushed like an accordion from the collision with the old oak tree. They passed the damaged fence and went down the slope.
