Maracas, also known as "shakers" or "chac chac," are traditional percussion instruments originating from South America. They typically consist of a hollow body filled with balls or sand. When shaken, they produce rhythmic sounds that are commonly used in Latin American music, as well as in many other musical styles such as pop or jazz.

The head of the maraca is filled with fine metallic sand, which ensures a articulate and dynamic sound. Maracas are almost always played in pairs and are shaken rhythmically or struck with the fingertips in various ways, creating their characteristic sound. A rarer way to play is to hit just one maraca in the open palm of the other hand.
