Due to its design and diameter, you cannot "advance" the ink by pressing the piston if it has gathered at the back end (in case you have the pen upside down), resulting in the nib not being supplied and drying out. Even if you turn it with the nib facing down, the viscosity of the ink combined with the diameter of the pump makes the 'return' of the ink to the feeder side and consequently to the nib slow, if at all!
