Description

Description

"Political theology" is a widespread yet ambiguous concept used with different meanings in secular contexts, primarily in the field of political and constitutional theory, and on the other hand, in ecclesiological and broader theological contexts.

At first glance, political theology refers to the theological foundations of political theory and philosophy, particularly of political science/state theory. However, there is also the other side of political theology or rather the other use of the same term to convey not the engagement with secularized theological concepts that have become political and constitutional, but with the political contexts, political dilemmas, and political objectives of theological, more often ecclesiastical discourse. Here we are primarily interested in the first aspect.

"Constitutional ethics" does not refer to a moral or even more so a moralistic approach to the Constitution, but to the moral content of the "positive" Constitution, as it has been historically shaped as a fundamental achievement of the modern era and strives to operate in the face of the challenges of the postmodern era. An achievement synonymous with the triptych of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

In this sense, "constitutional ethics" with its positivistic and value-laden content elevates the Constitution to a constitutional culture. The content of "constitutional ethics" is highlighted in many critical issues in the field of fundamental rights through its contrast with Christian ethics. The book includes studies and essays that share a common field concerning these two concepts and their interrelation or opposition.
