Description

Thorgal: The Board Game is a cooperative adventure narrative game for 1-4 players aged 14 and up, designed by Joanna Kijanka, Jan Maurycy, and Rafał Szyma. Players take on the roles of Thorgal, his wife Aaricia, their son Jolan, and Kriss, a deadly warrior, and engage in a series of adventures.

The game consists of 7 standalone scenarios, each lasting approximately 90-120 minutes of gameplay. The scenarios do not form a campaign nor do they have legacy features, so they can be played by different groups of players over an extended period.

Thorgal: The Board Game comes with a map book. Each scenario is played on a different map that players explore while fulfilling the scenario's objectives, promising entirely different adventures, hidden opportunities, and vibrant characters. Players are free to choose whether to travel as a group or split up to cover more areas simultaneously. They also undertake side quests that may help them win a scenario.

Another important feature of the game is the narrative book that contains descriptions of the encounters characters have in each scenario. The adventures described in the book are specific to each scenario and character, yet many of them are random within a scenario, offering greater replayability and allowing for repeated gameplay. There are also side plots that players can follow to gain benefits and uncover additional pieces of the story.

While Thorgal: The Board Game features a strong narrative element, it offers an innovative action selection mechanism. In this new mechanism, actions have different strengths depending on which other actions have already been performed. Players carefully plan their strategy and the order of actions they execute, as this has a direct impact on the strength of each action. This creates an interesting decision space and makes each round significant for everyone at the table.

Another important mechanic involves character development. Each character gains experience during the game and enhances their abilities. This dynamic progression allows players to make significant decisions about how to develop their hero in the game. Characters collect resources and craft items to help them survive in the dangerous world.
