Outward Day 1 Edition is an action-adventure game with RPG elements, in which players take on the role of a vulnerable traveler and explorer rather than an all-powerful hero. To survive in the wilderness, they must face enemies while also taking care of food, water, and sleep, setting up camp and preparing for the cold and illnesses.
Overcoming dangers requires planning and making use of traps, special equipment, and magic. Spells are cast through a series of ritual steps, while the autosave system prevents players from reverting to an earlier state. Defeat can lead to different scenarios, and each new adventure offers different choices of character, faction, skills, and items; the Legacy system carries over part of a previously completed story.
