It is cloth and not a screen. It does not have a dense enough weave so when it tries to provide brightness it loses a lot unless it is installed with a wall as a background. That is, it definitely won't work for a balcony. I will come back when I test it outside on the balcony with another, brighter projector. Of course, there is no convenience for automatic closing. You simply gather the cloth when you remove the clips
