This research analyzes police violence from a perspective that has not yet been explored by the Greek or international academic community.
By adopting an interactive approach, it focuses on a multifactorial field composed of a web of police, governmental, and judicial relations, to illustrate how this dynamic enhances police violence, undermines attempts to control it, and creates political and legal chaos.
The intersection of the motives behind police behavior with institutional public discourse or silence, the reasoning behind disciplinary and prosecutorial investigations or the absence of inquiry, judicial decisions, and police practices of evading accountability shows how their interaction leads to the establishment of a regime of substantive impunity that perpetuates police violence.
The analysis of the manifestation and management of police violence in 136 incidents is based, among other sources, on 128 interviews conducted with the complainants – members of parliament, journalists, lawyers, demonstrators, ordinary citizens, members of socially vulnerable groups – or their representatives and eyewitnesses.
