Description

The present book is a collective volume featuring 21 authors, university professors, intellectuals, and researchers.

Focusing on the tragic events of 1974, the authors of the volume, each with their own sensitivity and critical perspective, illuminate aspects of Cyprus's contemporary trajectory that are still open to (historical) research documentation.

Within the historical – social – political context of the period under review, the authors independently address issues concerning: the course and deadlocks of nationalisms, both in the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities, the critical evaluation of the leaders' choices at specific historical moments, the overview of fundamental perceptions and ideological trends as well as internal processes of organized political entities in both communities, the socio-psychological analytical approach to conflict resolution, with a special reference to Cyprus, which helps us transcend the dichotomy of "us" and "them," thus achieving a higher level of self-awareness, the dimension of ideological quests and new trends in literary creation, the themes of education, culture, and civilization, and the critical assessment of how Cyprus operates within the European Union.

The texts of the volume, as a whole with the scientific perspective and knowledge they offer, present an opportunity for reflection and reassessment of the events that brought Cyprus to the tragic occurrences of 1974, as well as its subsequent trajectory up to the present day.

Through the proposed reflection, the recognition of responsibilities and the rational pragmatic contemplation of the future is promoted, beyond fantasies or communicative power games.
