Description

Nominated for the Skroutz Book Awards 2025 Audience Awards.

Angela Merkel was responsible for governing Germany for sixteen years, during which she left her mark on the German, European, and international political scene through both her actions and her overall stance.

In her memoirs, she reflects on her life in two German states: in the German Democratic Republic until 1990, and in reunified Germany from 1990 onwards. How did a woman from the East manage to take the leadership of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and become the first female chancellor of reunified Germany? How did she become one of the most powerful heads of government in the Western world? What guided her on this path?

In the book Freedom, Angela Merkel describes daily life in the Chancellery, as well as the extremely dramatic days and nights during which she was called upon to make momentous decisions in Berlin, Brussels, and elsewhere.

Following the long thread of changes in international relations, she captures the pressure politicians face today when urgent solutions to complex problems are needed in a globalized world. Merkel takes us behind the scenes of international politics, highlighting both the importance and the limitations of personal-level discussions.

Angela Merkel outlines the conditions for the development of political action during a period of heightened confrontation. Her memoirs, dominated by a strong call for freedom, offer a unique insight into the upper echelons and inner workings of power.

About the book:

The first female chancellor of Germany

Angela Merkel, the first female chancellor of Germany and one of the most powerful women in the world, narrates her life and career in a landmark book. Titled Freedom, her political memoirs offer a personal and deeply insightful look at the role she played in the most critical moments of modern political history.

A tenure that marked the era
For 16 years, Merkel led Germany through unprecedented crises, leaving an indelible mark on the German and international political scene. Her narrative covers periods that marked history, from the financial crisis and the refugee crisis to the challenges of the pandemic, offering valuable insights into decision-making under pressure.

Two lives in two Germanys
Merkel reflects on her life, from her early years in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) to her life in reunified Germany. Through personal stories, she shares her childhood, youth, her studies in physics, and, of course, the events of 1989 with the fall of the Wall, which marked the beginning of her political career.

Encounters with the most powerful personalities
Merkel reveals what was said in her meetings with leaders and powerful personalities of the world, shedding light on the processes that shaped national, European, and global policies. From critical decisions to moments of pressure, the book offers a unique lens into the depths of power and the delicate balance required for leadership on a global level.

What does freedom mean?

The question of freedom is a central theme of the book. Merkel analyzes what freedom means to her, both politically and personally. As she herself writes:

"For me, freedom is to learn incessantly, not to remain stagnant, to constantly discover my limits."

A book about democracy and freedom Freedom is not only a memoir, but also an advocacy for democracy and human rights. Through the narration of her life and career, Merkel reminds us of the importance of freedom, the rule of law, and continuous learning.

The packages we received were special in another way too – something we realized when opening them; "this smells like the West," we would say. We meant the subtle scent of good soap or aromatic coffee. The East, on the other hand, smelled strongly of cleaning products, floor varnish, and turpentine. Even today, I recall that smell. For me, the official state of the GDR was the embodiment of... tastelessness. Only imitations instead of real natural materials, never cheerful colors. My parents kept finding ways to escape this lack of taste; for example, they bought the well-designed furniture from the Hellerau workshops, for which they sometimes had to wait a long time. Perhaps my current preference for colorful blazers is also due to this primary experience of the absence of vivid colors that I liked so much in everyday life in the GDR.
