The subject of this book is Pharmaceutical Technology, the science of designing, developing, and producing pharmaceutical forms at an industrial level, intended to serve as a primary aid for Pharmacy students in their studies of Drug Technology. The book aims to be useful for professionals in the pharmaceutical industry who are involved in the development and production of pharmaceutical forms.
The book in its complete form will consist of three volumes. The first volume, which you have in your hands, introduces the reader to the field of Pharmaceutical Technology, presents the principles of pharmaceutical form design and the parameters that must be considered for the design of effective, safe, and aesthetically pleasing pharmaceutical forms, and describes the pharmaceutical processes that take place during the industrial production of pharmaceutical forms.
Sterilization and the design and operation of clean rooms are addressed as interconnected parts of the effort to produce products with specific purity claims, such as injectable and ophthalmic preparations. A special chapter is dedicated to the technology of powders in one or more phases of the production of almost all pharmaceutical forms, including handling materials in the form of powders, and understanding the behavior of powders during various pharmaceutical processes is particularly important for the correct production of many types of pharmaceutical forms.
The second volume of the book is being prepared and aims to present an analytical overview of the different types of pharmaceutical forms, their composition, their properties, and their production and evaluation (quality control) methods. The third volume will deal with the technology of newer systems for delivering bioactive substances, that is, with the forms of controlled drug delivery and drug targeting, which have gained significant importance in recent years in our arsenal against disease.
