This book, aimed not only at specialized historical researchers but also at a broader reading audience, presents a comprehensive study of the prominent family of the Hypseleos/Hypseleontes of Pontic origin, which had a significant presence during the post-Byzantine period.
While the surname is old, the actual members of the house approach the number of sixty (60). The Hypseleontes descended from the village of Hypsele, which is not far from Argyroupoli/Gümüşhane in Pontus. From there, some family members moved to areas of the Ottoman Empire in the mid-17th century.
Over time, they gained the trust of the Ottomans, distinguished themselves for their education, and were knowledgeable in European and other languages. Other members settled in the Balkans, in Wallachia, where over time they became members of the local Parliament.
Some other members, such as Alexandros and his son Konstantinos, became princes in Wallachia and Moldova. Konstantinos's son, Alexandros, became the leader (General Commissioner) of the Friendly Society and initiated the national liberation struggle of the Greeks from the Principalities.
This genealogical/biographical work is based on rich archival material and relevant literature on the subject.
