The Great Mistake
A place cannot be defined nominally without bringing its history to the surface. The name and history of a location are interrelated concepts that are intricately connected. The naming of a place provides history, memories, traditions, culture, identity, language, citizenship, and other elements that have determined and continue to determine the historical development and trajectory of the people who have historically and timelessly inhabited it.
For the referred area of Skopje, the names Republic of Slavia or Lower Slavia, Slavonic Republic, Republic of Vardar, Republic of Skopje, would excellently define the name and history of the place. Or Republic of Paeonia or Dardania, even if they do not ethnically approach the people.
According to the author, the name accepted by the Greek state for the province of Skopje constitutes a huge national mistake. It marks the beginning, an important step towards the obliteration of the Greekness of the Macedonian region. A step that, along with the piracy of identity and language, the theft of cultural tradition and history, inevitably leads to the indigenous Macedonian forgetting who he was and who he is. At the same time, it creates difficult associations that inevitably lead to the existence of "Southern Macedonia."
Thus, while "North Macedonia" is a state with a strong core of "Macedonianism," the implied "South" is simply a province, a region of another state. It is deemed that this does not aid the solution that was given but rather stimulates irredentism and reignites the expansionist aspirations of the northern neighbors towards the south to complete the dream. May time prove us wrong.
