Description & Specifications

The colophon has a long history, dating back to the mid-15th century. At a time when typography was an art, it represented the decisive final touch of the master printer. There, on the last page of the book, the technical characteristics of the edition and all those who collaborated to bring it to fruition were mentioned. Colophons were printed in various impressive and wondrous shapes (hourglasses, inverted triangles, etc.), usually accompanied by various artistic elements, some linear design, an engraving, or a woodcut. The whole image of the colophon was a visual achievement, an authentic piece of art.

Today, the colophon tends to fade away. However, for Giannis Mamais, a book, in addition to having great content, must also be a work of art in itself, and his colophon is "a significant detail because in the colophon is preserved the beneficial echo of a harmonious symbiotic relationship. The skilled creators of the book, having accomplished their work, appear gathered in the 'house' of the book to signify the cooperative spirit, the collective artist who brought forth a jewel – their book, his book."
