Description

Oxygen, a manifesto work of the 00s generation, was written as theatrical prose spoken by two characters – a girl and a boy. The performance, structured in ten chapters, like a transcription of the Ten Commandments, like a new New Testament, begins from the opposite of "Thou shalt not kill" and culminates in a biblical Revelation.

“I write for a generation of educated youths who do not often go to the theater,” said Ivan Viripaev in 2003, the leading representative of New Russian dramaturgy, wanted by the Russian regime and a naturalized Pole.

The publication includes two texts: “the translation, which is accurate and faithful to the original, yet lacks its flow and acoustic complexity, and an adaptation – a rendition that has the necessary musicality but also many changes, cuts and additions, which are, I believe, in accord with the spirit of the author,” states George Koutlis, who translated the work.

He adds, regarding the adaptation he made in collaboration with Vasilis Magouliotis: “The changes in style and the rhythm of the writing create a dramaturgy in the form of language, an incredibly original linguistic collage. […] We chose to adapt the work so that it communicates more easily with today’s audience. Therefore, many references from the original to events of the time it was written or to elements of Russian culture that are unknown to the Greek viewer are absent.”
