This book does not aim to fully address the contemporary lack of a "scientific" manual for pastoral practice, but rather to systematically present the basic principles, both theoretical and practical, that constitute pastoral work.
It aims to describe the two dimensions of Pastoral Care, both at the spiritual and the psychological level – in scientific dialogue with theories of the psyche. It also seeks to highlight the characteristics of "charismatic Pastoral Care," which are often confused with pathological adoration of individuals and the expectation of "magical" abilities from them.
It does not describe the "how" ideal pastors should operate, but the "pathways" we must traverse and the "methods" we need to be trained in, so that we can reach the correct ecclesiological foundations and more effective pastoral practices.
This manual follows a complementary methodology in relation to the Lesson of Pastoral Care, by St. Nectarios of Pentapolis, namely, an approach to the "ethos and virtues" of the pastor through a dynamic description of both spiritual and psychological development.
In the pastoral navigation, the pastor must be familiar with the ecclesiological ground for this journey, the signposts of the Spirit-filled path, and the outcome leading to the saving harbor. The one being shepherded should also know the characteristics of a healthy pastor, towards a spiritual relationship grounded on appropriate ecclesiological bases.
