Description

An exciting study of one of the often-overlooked campaigns of World War II, as British/Commonwealth, native, and Italian forces fight for control of the Horn of Africa. In 1940, the Italian colonies in East Africa posed a serious threat to the British Empire, particularly to the supply flow through the Red Sea to Egypt. Fearing moves from Italian East Africa, the British high command sent reinforcements to its positions in Kenya and Sudan. Thus began a series of conflicts in East Africa, as the British sought to keep the Italians isolated and unable to threaten the supplies. In March 1941, the British theatre commander, General Archibald Wavell, chose a blitz campaign to eliminate the Italian threat once and for all. Italian military historian Pier Paolo Battistelli offers a refreshed narrative of this campaign, from the initial Italian attacks to the Allies' counter-offensive in Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Italian Somalia. Among the engagements covered are the battles of Tigray and Amba Alagi, as well as the battles of Gondar, Tug Argan, and Keren. This work presents an assessment of the forces involved, including Ord Wingate's forces, Selassie's supporters, and soldiers from Eritrea and Somalia, as well as experienced forces from India, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Italy. With vivid illustrations, detailed maps, and diagrams, this book highlights a neglected campaign of World War II and the deadly struggle for the Horn of Africa.
