The f/1.7 aperture is maintained throughout the focal length range, while seamless iris control allows smooth exposure changes during video recording. Its optical construction comprises 16 elements in 11 groups, including aspherical elements, ED elements and a UHR element, to reduce aberrations and deliver high resolution.

The lens features fast, precise autofocus and a focus ring with an AF/MF clutch. Its construction is resistant to dust, splashes and frost, for use in temperatures as low as -10 °C. The minimum focusing distance is 0.28 m at the wide-angle end and 0.31 m at the telephoto end.
