Description & Specifications

The Hunt for Love, written in 1945, remains today one of the most entertaining and perceptive novels ever written about love and coming of age. How tedious it is to wait to grow up!

Linda, her sisters, and their cousin Fanny are obsessed with marriage and sex as they desperately seek the perfect lover. However, finding the ideal man is much more difficult than the sisters thought. Linda will have to endure first a marriage to a narrow-minded conservative MP and then to a masculine communist with no sense of humor before finding true love in Paris just before World War II.

Mitford's protagonists are modeled on members of her own completely unconventional family. The reader gets to know the Radletts through the eyes of cousin Fanny, who lives with them in their estate in Alconley, Gloucestershire. The patriarch of the family is the boisterous Uncle Matthew, who sends the children on a hunt when there aren't enough foxes. Aunt Sadie is the perpetually absent-minded yet devoted mother, and their seven children, despite the joys of their unusual childhood, are eager to grow up.

I doubt I will ever tire of reading Linda's horrific account of household management, Uncle Matthew's outrageous critique of Romeo and Juliet, or Davy's scathing analysis of the Radlett family's mineral collection, which is "worthy of a museum." However, beneath the fragile surface of this novel's humor lurks something infinitely more melancholic, something that can catch you and pull you into its dark undercurrent when you least expect it.
