In western Peloponnese, in the lush valley between the Alfeios River and its tributary Kladeos, the Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus was established, one of the most important religious centers of ancient Greece, which radiated in ancient Greece for over a thousand years.
This book aims to introduce visitors to this significant site of the ancient world, the place where the Olympic Games were born, the greatest sporting event of antiquity, which, thanks to the high values and ideals of Olympism, significantly shaped the history and values of the ancient Greek world.
The archaeological site and the Archaeological Museum of Olympia are presented, where the exhibited works are related to the site, thus providing a comprehensive picture of the Sanctuary. Also included are the history of the Olympic Games and the Museum of the History of the Ancient Olympic Games, where valuable information is provided about the exceptional works of art housed in its halls, through which the visitor learns about the mythological and historical background that constituted the ideological framework of the Olympic Games.
The presentation also includes brief references with images of the recent findings from the archaeological excavations of the Archaeological Service over the last 15 years, which have significantly changed the image of the topography of the Sanctuary, contributing to the reevaluation of the boundaries of the archaeological site.
