Energy today is one of the most important sectors of the economy, and developments, especially regarding fuel prices – oil, natural gas, electricity – largely determine economic growth and consumer prosperity.
The energy crisis that erupted in the summer of 2021 peaked in 2022 and continues in a milder manner to this day, primarily affected European countries, with direct impacts on Greece. In light of these developments and aiming to make it understandable to a broader audience what exactly happened, what the deeper causes were, what the emerging solutions to exit the crisis are and what Greece's role is in all this, Kostis Stamoulis, one of the most well-known analysts in the energy sector in Greece and abroad, proceeded to write the book "GREECE IN THE NEW ENERGY AGE – The exit from the energy crisis and the prospects in the new international environment," which has just been published by the "Aelos" publishing house.
The author's approach is wholly comprehensive, as the investigation of the causes of the crisis covers a wide range of topics and is not limited solely to the purely energy aspect of the discussion, but includes the historical background, the interconnection of energy and economy, the composition of the global and Greek energy balance, the factors responsible for the continuous increase in energy demand, climate change, and how the apocalyptic narratives surrounding it have eroded the calm and objective analysis required.
The sought-after energy transition today, focused on the penetration of clean fuels in the energy mix, the difficulties existing for a smooth transformation, as well as the immense importance of developing and adopting new technologies occupy a significant part of the book.
The author argues that the vision for a world that moves exclusively with clean energy can become a reality, provided that the transition currently underway does not lead to economic disaster. Other significant sections covered include the role of energy in shipping and the comparative advantage of our country, the importance of energy in foreign policy, and the new geopolitical environment within which Greece is called to operate.
Additionally, the need for our country to reduce its very high energy dependence is emphasized, as well as how there can be serious and sustainable economic recovery and exit from the crisis through policies that will be oriented towards energy self-sufficiency.
