Adenovirus has a worldwide distribution and is widely spread in the environment. Epidemics mainly occur at the end of winter, in spring, and at the beginning of summer. It can affect all ages, but it is more commonly observed in young children. The clinical picture is usually mild, but more severe in immunocompromised individuals.
Transmission of adenovirus occurs easily through contaminated hands and contact with any contaminated surface or object, even with contaminated water. The incubation period of the virus is 8-10 days.
- Diarrhea (main symptom) lasts about 7-8 days.
- Mild vomiting appears 1-2 days after diarrhea in 80% of cases.
- Fever in 40-90% of cases, lasting 2-3 days.
- Severe dehydration is rarely observed.
Treatment is symptomatic and includes the administration of antipyretics and the replenishment of fluids and electrolytes. Adhering to general hygiene measures is crucial for preventing the transmission of the virus.
