Description

Where and when was the question of the relationship between the academic world and the feminist social movement raised in Greece? This collective volume systematically documents the emergence, activities, and theoretical formulations of the Women’s Studies Group (WSG) during its main period of activity, 1983-2003.

The Women’s Studies Group (WSG) was the first feminist collective formed by women academics from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the early fertile years of the Metapolitefsi. Yiota Kravaritou and Zogia Chronaki, both lecturers at the Law School of Aristotle University and active members of the Movement of Democratic Women, proposed in 1982 the creation of a Women’s Group at the Law School, which was recognized by its General Assembly. In 1983, it expanded to include women academics from other scientific fields to achieve the goal of interdisciplinarity, a defining feature of women’s studies since then.

The initial goal of the group was to intellectually and theoretically shape within the university the ideas that emerged from the women's movement. Through the experiential texts and the valuable documentation material included in this volume, the authors shed light on the timeless positions and claims of the WSG, as well as its relationships with other women’s collectives both within and outside various universities, in Greece and abroad, so as to make visible the positions, resistances, and reactions that existed both within and outside Aristotle University.

At the same time, issues related to similar forms of women's studies and gender studies, which developed at that time in direct relation to the theoretical and ideological questions of the international feminist movement in universities in Northern Europe and the USA, are studied correspondingly.
