We are all confronted with a problem. Bureaucratic practices, habits, and sensitivities overwhelm us. Our lives have come to be organized around filling out forms. However, the language we use to talk about these issues is not just sadly inadequate – it could very well have been designed to exacerbate the problem.
We need to find a way to talk about what it is that we truly disagree with, to speak honestly about the violence it involves, but at the same time, to understand what is so appealing about it, what sustains it, which elements carry within them some potential for redemption towards a truly free society, which elements are seen as the unavoidable price one has to pay to live in any complex society, and which can and must be eliminated once and for all.
If this book plays even a small role in igniting such a discussion, then it will have truly contributed to modern political life.
